Matthew R. Rechtien

Matthew R. Rechtien is a senior assistant city attorney for the City of Ann Arbor, where he represents, counsels, and advises the city, especially its Public Services Area, on a wide range of legal matters and disputes, including construction, real estate, commercial, insurance, environmental, regulation, and land use and private development. Before joining the city, he practiced construction law and commercial and insurance litigation for 10 years, first at Clark Hill, PLC, then at Bodman, PLC, where he was a member. Mr. Rechtien represented small businesses, banks, contractors, owners, insurers, and design professionals in negotiations and disputes, from pretrial through collections. Before becoming a lawyer, he worked as a consulting structural engineer in Texas, where he designed structures for buildings and stadiums. A licensed professional engineer in Michigan, Washington, and Texas (inactive), Mr. Rechtien is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, the Defense Research Institute, the American Bar Association, and the Federal Bar Association, and is a past president of the Structural Engineers Association of Michigan. He is admitted to practice in all courts in the state and has been recognized a Top Lawyer by "dBusiness" magazine and a Rising Star in construction litigation by Michigan Super Lawyers. Mr. Rechtien has published a number of articles and speaks on construction, engineering, and insurance law. He earned his bachelor’s degree summa cum laude in Civil Engineering from the University of Michigan. He earned a master’s degree in structural engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, and earned his juris doctor degree with high honors in law from the University of Washington.
