Hon. Shalina D. Kumar

In 2021, Hon. Shalina D. Kumar became the first person of South Asian descent to be nominated for a federal judgeship in Michigan when she was sworn in as a U.S. District Court judge for the Eastern District of Michigan. In 2020, she was reappointed to her position as chief judge by the Michigan Supreme Court that she began in 2018. Judge Kumar had previously been appointed to the Oakland County Circuit Court in 2007. Before taking the bench, she was a civil litigator in private practice from 1997 to 2007. Judge Kumar is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, the Federal Bar Association, the Oakland County Bar Association, the Michigan Association for Justice, and the South Asian Bar Association.
