Robert P. Young, Jr.

Former Chief Justice Robert P. Young, Jr. has had a long involvement with civil procedure. He has served at every level of the Michigan judicial system--first as a judge of the Michigan Court of Appeals, then as a justice of the Michigan Supreme Court, and now as a visiting judge in the state's circuit courts. In addition to trying cases as a visiting judge, Mr. Young mediates and arbitrates disputes. Mr. Young was appointed by the Michigan Supreme Court to the committee that finalized the Michigan Rules of Court that were approved for use in 1985. He has also served on the boards of many charitable groups and was an adjunct professor at Wayne State University Law School for more than 20 years, and more recently taught at Michigan State University Law School. Mr. Young was the author of the chapter on summary disposition as well as the coeditor of "Michigan Civil Procedure" from 1999 until 2024. He is also the author of several law review articles and has been a faculty member for ICLE programs.
