Hon. Wanda M. Stokes

Hon. Wanda M. Stokes was appointed to the bench in December 2018. Prior to that, she was director of the Michigan Talent Investment Agency (TIA), appointed by Governor Rick Snyder to serve as a member of his Executive Cabinet in July 2016. She was responsible for more than 800 staff members and multi-million dollar budgets and represented the state on a host of committees. Judge Stokes has held leadership positions in the private and public sectors for more than 30 years. She began her legal career with Ford Motor Company’s Office of the General Counsel, then relocated to Lansing where she worked as a staff attorney and personnel director at Auto-Owners Insurance Company. Her tenure with the state began in 1999 when she was appointed assistant attorney general by Hon. Jennifer M. Granholm. She held many distinguished leadership positions, including chief of staff and bureau chief of several divisions. Judge Stokes provided legal counsel on numerous legal, legislative, and policy issues. She was also a founding member of the department’s professional responsibility, ethics, and policy committee. In July 2015 Judge Stokes was appointed deputy director of the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, where she also served as risk manager. She was responsible for the oversight of several state agencies within the department. During this same time Judge Stokes was an adjunct professor at Cooley Law School in Lansing, and still enjoys mentoring opportunities whenever possible.
