Hon. Curt A. Benson

Hon. Curt A. Benson was elected to the Kent County Circuit bench for a six-year term beginning on January 1, 2019. He had been assigned to the civil/criminal docket. On July 27, 2022, the Supreme Court appointed Judge Benson to serve as the Kent County Business Court Judge for a term expiring on April 1, 2025. Before his election, Judge Benson was an attorney with Cummings, McClorey, Davis and Acho, PLC, where he specialized in civil rights defense and insurance cases. A distinguished professor emeritus at Cooley Law School, Judge Benson has taught evidence, civil procedure, contracts, and torts. He has also taught an LLM-level insurance law course. Before beginning a career in teaching, Judge Benson tried dozens of jury trials in civil and criminal courts throughout Michigan. He spent six years on the Grand Rapids Public Schools Board of Education, serving two years as president. Judge Benson is a frequent speaker at seminars and civic organizations on topics ranging from insurance coverage issues to violence in public schools.
