Joseph A. Lavigne has been a criminal litigator since 1996 and a commercial and business litigator since 2001. Mr. Lavigne's criminal practice focuses on drunk driving and defense of all criminal offenses at the investigatory, postcharging, trial, and appellate stages, ranging from traffic tickets to homicide cases, and his commercial practice primarily includes business and commercial litigation, as well as some transactional work. He is also is a fully trained mediator. Mr. Lavigne has tried more than 150 criminal and civil jury trials to verdict along with many more bench trials in numerous district and circuit courts and the Michigan Court of Claims, and he has successfully handled appeals in the Michigan Court of Appeals, the Michigan Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court. He has been an instructor for the Oakland Police Academy and the Michigan Judicial Institute and has guest lectured for Wayne State University Law School, University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, and the Oakland County Bar Association. Mr. Lavigne has also published several law reviews and related articles. He has consistently been rated AV Preeminent by Martindale-Hubbell for legal excellence and ethical practice, has been recognized for more than a decade as a Michigan Super Lawyer (including as a Top 100 Lawyer in Michigan across all disciplines), and is listed by "DBusiness" magazine as a Top Lawyer. He is a member of the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and the Criminal Law, Business Law, and Alternative Dispute Resolution Sections of the State Bar of Michigan.
