Herbert A. Sanders practices in the area of labor law. Admitted to practice in both Michigan and the District of Columbia, he has successfully litigated cases against numerous Fortune 500 companies, winning a $1.18 million verdict recognized as the highest in state history for a union member’s effort to freely exercise his First Amendment right to freedom of speech and association. Mr. Sanders has served as a labor consultant for some of the largest labor unions in Michigan. He argued and won a landmark case before the Michigan Supreme Court concerning voting rights and the repeal of Michigan’s emergency manager law. He also serves as a member of the board of directors for the Sugar Law Center for Economic and Social Justice. Rated AV Preeminent by Martindale-Hubbell, Mr. Sanders has received a number of awards and honors. In 2007, he received the Metropolitan Detroit Area Chapter Gloria Cobbin Community Service Award from the Coalition of Black Trade Unions, and in 2009 he was selected by the Solidarity Center to participate in the U.S. Trade Union Leadership Study Tour of Russia, in which he assisted Russian workers with union organizing and contract negotiations. Also in 2009, Mr. Sanders was named a Harvard Law School Labor and Worklife Fellow for the Harvard John F. Kennedy School of Government. A former Robert Millender Fellow, he received the Community Activist Award from the Michigan Coalition for Human Rights in 2012.
