Medicare Liens
On-Demand Seminar (Posted 09/19/18) | Level: Basic
Cosponsored by the Probate & Estate Planning Section of the State Bar of Michigan

Medicare liens affect personal injury lawyers and lawyers acting as guardians. Medicare liens against personal injury settlements can significantly impact resolution of the case. Mismanagement of the settlement funds can jeopardize Medicare eligibility. Develop a working knowledge of the Medicare Secondary Payer Act, assess Medicare-covered medical expenses, and work with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to facilitate lien payoff and distributions for future medical expenses.

  • Provide timely notice to the Benefits Coordination & Recovery Center (BCRC)
  • Verify and dispute line item expenses using agency diagnosis codes
  • Comply with CMS guidelines on managing Medicare eligible settlement funds
