The University of Detroit Mercy School of Law provides a challenging legal education that emphasizes the Catholic tradition of intellectual excellence, a sensitivity to the ethical dimensions of human experience, student-centered learning with an urban focus and community service. The faculty in our program seeks to integrate intellectual, spiritual, moral and social development in our students. We offer a small college atmosphere noted for the accessibility of the faculty and the friendliness of the students and staff. We welcome your interest in our School of Law and invite you to contact us about our long and proud traditions in legal education.

The School of Law was established in 1912 as a part of the University of Detroit founded in 1877 by the Society of Jesus. The Jesuits, as the order is more commonly known, have a 400 year tradition synonymous with intellectual rigor and academic excellence particularly in higher education. In 1990 the University joined with Mercy College, founded by the Religious Sisters of Mercy in 1941, to strengthen our commitment of compassionate service to the community through its educational programs. The School of Law is located in downtown Detroit across the street from the new world headquarters of General Motors Corporation within easy access of the state and federal courts, prominent law firms, multinational corporations and government offices, offering students opportunities for internships and employment.

Graduates of the School of Law enjoy a history of success. The legal education we provide has enabled them to serve their communities with distinction as prominent attorneys, judges, and public servants, often in leadership capacities. The School of Law has educated more than 125 of the Michigan judges at all levels of the Michigan Court system, several federal judgeships, Michigan's current Attorney General, and numerous other elected officials including one-half of the prosecuting attorneys in Michigan. Throughout our history the School of Law has remained faithful to the Jesuit tradition of excellence and has graduated over 6000 attorneys who have contributed to communities throughout the world. Our students are encouraged to honor their clients, meet the moral and ethical challenges they confront in practice, and master the technical and human elements of their profession.

Our curriculum prepares students in the essential elements of legal work and the fundamental principles upon which the law has operated throughout its history. Our innovative and novel approach to teaching legal research, analysis and writing, and the resulting practical experience students gain in document drafting, is among the most demanding and informative in the country. It is attracting attention from legal educators across the United States as well as those who employ our students. At the School of Law, students sharpen and shape their natural reasoning and deductive abilities, gain valuable experience and insights, and master the basics of legal theory and practice.

The School of Law offers a rich array of distinctive programs and opportunities in addition to its innovative basic program. Our London Law Programme provides an incomparable opportunity for students to study international and comparative law for a semester in London, England, without any additional time necessary to complete their degree. The Canadian/United States Joint Degree program permits Canadian lawyers and legal students from the University of Windsor Faculty of Law to obtain a joint degree at the School of Law with a minimum of duplication of the comparable programs. The Intellectual Property Law Institute permits students to engage in extensive course selections in the area of the law of patents, trademarks, copyrights, computers and technology through a consortium of area law schools and the Section of Intellectual Property Law of the State Bar of Michigan. The American Inn of Court chapter at the School of Law, the first in Michigan, permits selected students to participate in monthly meetings providing them with the unique opportunity to learn in the social and professional environment of the bench and bar in the Detroit legal community modeled on the English tradition of legal education. Our Urban Law Clinic is a part of our commitment to community service and provides opportunities to students to represent indigent clients in criminal and civil matters through a series of programs conducted by our faculty. Our extensive extern program provides similar opportunities to students by placements in local court and government agencies.
