Who We Are
The Institute of Continuing Legal Education is a
nonprofit continuing legal education organization, entirely self-supported
by its seminar registration fees and product sales.
ICLE is a jointly sponsored Institute of the University
of Michigan. Its cosponsors are The State
Bar of Michigan, The University of Michigan
Law School, Wayne State University Law
School, The Thomas M. Cooley Law School,
University of Detroit Mercy
School of Law, and Ave Maria School of Law.
The ICLE
Executive Committee consists of representatives of ICLE's sponsoring
organizations and meets three times a year with the ICLE Director
and department heads.
ICLE was created in 1959 at the request of the Board
of Commissioners of the State Bar of Michigan, to meet the continuing
education needs of the legal community.
The Institute is located at 1020 Greene Street, on
the campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, phone (734)
764-0533; fax (734) 763-2412. See
directions.
In addition to a regular staff of employees, including
10 attorneys, ICLE has established a network of volunteer speakers
and authors who contribute their expertise to its publications and
seminars. ICLE has earned its excellent reputation by consistently
providing attorneys with high-quality, accurate, up-to-date, Michigan-specific
products and seminars at reasonable prices.
The Institute presents 70-80 individual seminar titles
each year, and schedules more than 250 presentations annually. Most
live presentations take place in Plymouth, Grand Rapids, or Ann
Arbor while video replays occur in Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, Lansing,
Marquette, and Traverse City. ICLE also makes many of its seminars available as live and archived
webcasts to provide CLE access to lawyers in every corner of the
state.
ICLE publishes over 50 Michigan treatises and practice
handbooks in print, most with annual or periodic supplements. The
Institute also produces 3 stand-alone disk products. The majority
of ICLE books are also available online, offered as subscriptions
to individual titles or as a single subscription to the ICLE Online
Library. Online books are continually updated, linked to Michigan
primary law, and fully searchable.
The Institute offers Michigan lawyers an ever-expanding
set of online resources including webcasts, seminar materials, an
extensive bank of drafted legal forms, how-to kits, legal updates,
and new law centers. These online resources, along with attendance
to ICLE Partnership seminars, are available as part of ICLE’s Partnership,
an annual subscription service. The Institute, in collaboration
with the State Bar of Michigan, also offers Michigan Law Online,
a collection of Michigan caselaw back to 1942. This resource is
free to Michigan Bar members.
