Program Requirements

To complete the certificate, you must take all required seminars, two elective seminars, and one of the limited enrollment seminars.

Required Seminars
We strongly recommend that you take the first three seminars first.

Fundamentals of Estate Planning
Basic level, full day, offered annually in October/November

Planning Techniques for the Taxable Estate
Basic/Intermediate level, full day, offered annually in December

Fundamentals of Estate Administration
Basic level, full day, offered annually in February

Preparing Estate and Gift Tax Returns and Post-Death Tax Planning
Basic level, full day, offered every other year in September

Administration of Trusts
Basic level, half day, offered every other year in the fall

Estate and Financial Planning for the Elderly or Disabled Client
Basic level, full day, offered annually in June

Estate Planning for Retirement Assets *
Intermediate level, half day, offered every other year in November


Electives
two or more will be offered each year, additional titles may be added

Probate and Estate Planning Institute
Intermediate/Advanced level, two days, offered annually in May and June

Annual Drafting Estate Planning Documents
Intermediate level, full day, offered annually in January/February

Annual Medicaid and Health Care Planning Update
Intermediate level, half day, offered annually in March/April

Estate Planning for Second Marriages and Nontraditional Families
Intermediate level, half day

Drafting Irrevocable Life Insurance Trusts After the 2001 Tax Act
Intermediate/Advanced level, half day

Handling Contested Estate Proceedings
Intermediate level, half day

Using Software in Estate Planning: Document Preparation, Accounting, and Tax Preparation
Basic/Intermediate level, half day

Michigan's New Uniform Principal and Income Act
Intermediate level, half-day

* Required for participants beginning the program after 9/1/05. This seminar replaces the Annual Drafting Estate Planning Documents seminar as a requirement.


Limited enrollment seminars
Multiple seminars will be offered each year

You must complete the Fundamentals of Estate Planning, Planning Techniques for the Taxable Estate, and the Fundamentals of Estate Administration seminars before registering for a limited enrollment seminar.

These seminars are limited to 21 registrants.

Seminar: Drafting an Estate Plan for an Estate under $5 Million
Intermediate level, 9 am - 3:30 pm

Seminar: Administering a Decedent’s Taxable Estate
Intermediate level, 9 am - 3:30 pm

Titles and frequency of all seminars subject to change.
