Matthew R. Rechtien

Matthew R. Rechtien is general counsel of and a senior principal at the international engineering consulting firm at which he began his professional career as an engineer from 1999 through 2004. Mr. Rechtien runs the firm's legal department and represents and advises the firm on all legal issues, including contracting, corporate governance, compliance, insurance, real estate, and litigation. Before returning to the firm, he was a Senior Assistant City Attorney for Ann Arbor, where he represented, counseled, and advised the city, especially its public services, on a wide range of legal matters and disputes, including construction, real estate, commercial, insurance, environmental, regulation, and land use and private development. Before joining the city, Mr. Rechtien practiced construction law and commercial and insurance litigation for 10 years, first at Clark Hill, PLC, then at Bodman, PLC, where he was a member. He represented small businesses, banks, contractors, owners, insurers, and design professionals in negotiations and disputes, from pretrial through collections. A licensed professional engineer in Michigan, Washington, and Texas, Mr. Rechtien is a member of the State Bars of Michigan and Texas, the American Council of Engineering Companies' Legal Counsel Forum, the American Bar Association, and other bar associations. He is a past president of the Structural Engineers Association of Michigan. Mr. Rechtien has been recognized as a Top Lawyer by "DBusiness" magazine and as a Rising Star in construction litigation by Michigan Super Lawyers. He has published a number of articles and speaks on construction, engineering, and insurance law.
