Matthew T. Nelson

Matthew T. Nelson is an appellate attorney and chairs the firm's Appellate Practice Group. He has successfully represented clients in the U.S. Supreme Court, the Michigan Supreme Court, several federal courts of appeals, and the Michigan Court of Appeals. Mr. Nelson successfully argued before the U.S. Supreme Court on behalf of an individual against the federal government in "Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians v Patchak." His appellate experience includes submitting amicus curiae briefs in the state and federal courts, including briefs on behalf of the State of Michigan, the Defense Research Institute, the Coalition of Christian Colleges and Universities, the Michigan Defense Trial Counsel, and the Michigan Health and Hospital Association. Mr. Nelson has been appointed to the Defense Research Institute's national amicus committee and elected to the board of the Michigan Defense Trial Counsel. He has twice been awarded a Distinguished Brief Award by a panel of jurists and professors for amicus briefs he has submitted to the Michigan Supreme Court. Three times, he has been named one of Michigan's best appellate attorneys under 40, as chosen by "Michigan Super Lawyers."
