Derk W. Beckerleg

Derk W. Beckerleg was an executive partner with Secrest Wardle; he retired in April 2025. He specialized in municipal law for more than 40 years, representing numerous Michigan municipalities in such matters as property tax appeals, zoning, and condemnation, as well as the drafting of ordinances, resolutions, and contracts. Mr. Beckerleg represented the cities of Auburn Hills and Bloomfield Hills as their city attorney, the Village of Bingham Farms as its village attorney, and Bloomfield Township as its township attorney. He had more than 32 years of litigation experience before the Michigan Tax Tribunal, particularly property tax appeals and cases pertaining to the valuation of both real and personal property and special assessment matters. Mr. Beckerleg is a member of the Oakland County Bar Association and the State Bar of Michigan. Author of an article published in "Smart Business," he has conducted numerous seminars on a variety of municipal topics, including zoning board of appeals and planning commission practices and procedures. Mr. Beckerleg was designated a Michigan Super Lawyer from 2007 to 2022 and recognized by "The Best Lawyers in America" from 2011 to 2022 and as a "Dbusiness" Top Lawyer from 2012 to 2022. In 2017, he received the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys Distinguished Municipal Attorney Award.
