Hon. Phillip J. Shefferly was appointed as a judge for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Michigan in 2003 and as chief judge in 2009. A magna cum laude graduate of Wayne State University Law School, Judge Shefferly was in private practice before taking the bench. His practice was concentrated in business reorganizations and Chapter 11 matters, primarily representing business debtors, but also representing secured creditors, creditors' committees, and other parties in interest in bankruptcy cases. Judge Shefferly also had extensive trial and other litigation experience in bankruptcy, federal, and state courts. He is a frequent speaker and presenter for the American Bankruptcy Institute, the Federal Bar Association, the Consumer Bankruptcy Association, and ICLE.
