Appointed to the bench in 2004, Hon. Richard M. Skutt is assigned to the Family Law (Domestic Relations) Division. Previously he practiced law for 32 years, focusing in the areas of workers' compensation and social security disability. A member of the National Lawyers Guild and the American Constitution Society for Law and Policy, Judge Skutt is a past president of the Michigan Trial Lawyers Association (MTLA) and a former member of the State Bar of Michigan Workers' Compensation Law Section Council. In 1999, he was inducted into the Workers' Compensation Hall of Fame at the School of Labor and Industrial Relations of Michigan State University (MSU). Judge Skutt was the recipient of the State Bar of Michigan's John W. Cummiskey Award in 1988 and a Spirit of Detroit Award in 1981 and has been named as MTLA's 2006 recipient of its Champion of Justice Award. He has lectured on workers' compensation and social security law for ICLE, MTLA, and MSU's Labor Education Program.
