ICLE Directors
 
David R. Watson
Executive Director

David R. Watson joined ICLE in January 2017 as ICLE's executive director. He oversees ICLE's day-to-day operations, including implementing short- and long-range strategic objectives, managing finances and administrative policies, and representing the Institute. Before joining ICLE, Mr. Watson was the executive director of the 74,000 member New York State Bar Association, helping implement policies approved by its House of Delegates and executive committee. He was also the executive director for the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association from 2010 to 2014 and previously spent 10 years as a manager for what is now Lexis-Nexis. Mr. Watson is a member of both the Ohio and New York State Bar Associations.

 
H. Lalla Shishkevish
Associate Director

As ICLE's associate director, H. Lalla Shishkevish is responsible for content planning, marketing research and strategy, and strategic planning oversight. Before joining ICLE in 2015, Ms. Shishkevish served as director of continuing legal education at the District of Columbia Bar from 1996 to 2015. She also practiced administrative law with several law firms in Washington, DC. Ms. Shishkevish is an active member and past president of the Association for Continuing Legal Education, frequently serving as a committee member and speaking on topics such as leadership and interactive education. Ms. Shishkevish is a member of the DC Bar, the State Bar of Georgia, and the State Bar of Michigan.

 
Jeffrey E. Kirkey
Education Director, Live Events and Section Services

Jeffrey E. Kirkey joined ICLE in 1998 and now directs the development and implementation of ICLE's education services, including major events, hands-on training, on-demand seminars, contract services, and online initiatives. He also teaches technology-related programs. Before joining ICLE, Mr. Kirkey worked at a small law firm in Ann Arbor and headed a computer consulting firm specializing in helping law offices. He is active in the Association for Continuing Legal Education (ACLEA), serving in a variety of leadership roles and frequently presenting at ACLEA conferences on technology, innovation, and business-related topics. A member of the State Bar of Michigan, Mr. Kirkey is a past chair of its Young Lawyers Section and also served on the State Bar's Board of Commissioners.

 
Cindy M. Huss
Director, Publications and Online Resources

Cindy M. Huss practiced for over 20 years before joining ICLE's staff in 2006. In her current role as the director of publications and online products, Ms. Huss oversees the publications department and ICLE staff lawyers and manages the development and production of ICLE print and online resources. Before joining ICLE, Ms. Huss worked as an assistant general counsel at Michigan State University, an associate at Dykema, an assistant general counsel at the University of Michigan, and a career clerk to Hon. Ralph B. Guy, Jr., of U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Ms. Huss is a member of the State Bar of Michigan.

 
Stephanie D. Fowler
Director of Operations

Joining ICLE in 2003 as the marketing and sales manager, Stephanie D. Fowler is now the director of operations where she oversees the Institute's budget and business operations as well as IT overall (strategic alignment of the ICLE platform, security, and online product development). She also oversees and plans technology, design, and user experience aspects of the website and web-based products. With more than 16 years of experience in the fields of marketing, brand management, graphic design, public relations, product development, and customer experience, Ms. Fowler's unique combination of work experience gives her a broad perspective to draw on at ICLE. She is a member of and presenter for the Association for Continuing Legal Education.

Jeanne E. Murphy
ICLE Staff Lawyer, Publications and Online Resources

Jeanne E. Murphy has been with ICLE since 2005 and currently works with contributors to update and edit publications and online resources in the areas of probate and estate planning and elder law. She also develops new content, including interactive online education programs, and is a moderator. Ms. Murphy previously spent several years as a research attorney for the Michigan Court of Appeals, and before that was an assistant city attorney for the City of Dearborn. She is a member of the Military and Veteran's Law, American Indian Law, Social Security Lawyers, Probate and Estate Planning, and Elder Law and Disability Rights Sections of the State Bar of Michigan.

 
John B. Swift II
ICLE Staff Lawyer, Publications and Online Resources

John B. Swift II works with ICLE contributors to produce on-demand seminars in a variety of practice areas. Mr. Swift also develops other ICLE products, including How-To Kits, Top Tips in Ten Minutes, and online training programs. While in law school, Mr. Swift worked as a student intern on policy issues for the Office of the Governor of Michigan and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. Before joining ICLE in 2015, he spent four years in private practice at a small firm handling civil litigation, transactional matters, commercial and residential leasing, property disputes, and estate planning. Mr. Swift is a member of the Criminal Law, Litigation, Marijuana Law, and Real Property Law Sections of the State Bar of Michigan.

 
Kanika Ferency
ICLE Staff Lawyer, Publications and Online Resources

Kanika Ferency joined ICLE in 2016. In her role at ICLE, she works with contributors to draft, edit, and update ICLE publications and resources in the areas of bankruptcy, business, consumer, debtor and creditor, and family law. Before coming to ICLE, Ms. Ferency worked at Lakeshore Legal Aid, where she advised low-income and elderly litigants on consumer, employment, housing, domestic, asylum, and immigration issues. She also clerked for the Hon. Karen McDonald in the Family Division for the Sixth Circuit Court. Ms. Ferency is a member of the Family, Business, and Consumer Law Sections of the State Bar of Michigan.

 
Lisa F. Geherin
Assistant Education Director, Live Events and Section Services

Lisa F. Geherin coordinates and plans ICLE live seminars and institutes. Before joining ICLE in 2010, Ms. Geherin was business development counsel for First American Title's National Commercial Services Division in Michigan, responsible for marketing and sales efforts in Metro Detroit. She practiced law for 10 years in Michigan and California litigating construction defect, personal injury, automobile negligence, and medical malpractice cases. Ms. Geherin is a member of the California Bar Association and the State Bar of Michigan and its Litigation, Family Law, and Labor and Employment Law Sections. A former social worker, Ms. Geherin worked for the Clark County Public Guardian's Office in Las Vegas before attending law school.

 
Maximillian (Max) H. Matthies
ICLE Staff Lawyer, Publications and Online Resources

Maximillian (Max) H. Matthies joined ICLE in May 2017. Working with ICLE contributors, he produces on-demand seminars in a variety of practice areas as well as develops other ICLE products, including How-To Kits, Top Tips in Ten Minutes, and online training programs. Before joining ICLE, Mr. Matthies spent 12 years handling civil litigation, estate planning, transactional law, property tax law, and business law. During that time, he operated a private practice contracting his services to smaller firms and sole practitioners. Mr. Matthies is a member of the Information Technology Law, LGBTQA, Probate and Estate Planning, and Solo and Small Firm Sections of the State Bar of Michigan.

 
Melanie C. Hagan
ICLE Staff Lawyer, Publications and Online Resources

Melanie C. Hagan joined ICLE in 2012. She works with ICLE's contributors to update and edit publications and online resources in the real property, municipal law, and law practice management areas. Before joining ICLE, Ms. Hagan worked as a staff attorney at the Oregon Supreme Court and practiced law at a large San Francisco law firm. She is a member of the Real Property, Environmental, Law Practice Management, Public Corporation, and LGBTQA Law Sections of the State Bar of Michigan.

 
Rachael M. Sedlacek
ICLE Staff Lawyer, Publications and Online Resources

Rachael M. Sedlacek joined ICLE in 2012. She works with ICLE's contributors to update and edit publications and online resources in the areas of criminal law, insurance law, business torts, and no-fault. Ms. Sedlacek is also a member of ICLE's interactive education team, moderates on-demand seminars, and handles ICLE's copyright issues. Before coming to ICLE, Ms. Sedlacek practiced at a New Hampshire firm where she handled a variety of family law, negligence, real property, and appellate matters. She is a member of the New Hampshire Bar Association and the Negligence and Criminal Law Sections of the State Bar of Michigan.

 
Rebekah Page-Gourley
ICLE Staff Lawyer, Publications and Online Resources

Rebekah Page-Gourley works with ICLE contributors to update and edit ICLE publications and online resources in the litigation, negligence, and employment law practice areas. She plans and develops new products and leads several initiatives geared toward building and maintaining a diverse contributor base and helping new lawyers succeed in practice. Ms. Page-Gourley also works with Michigan law school librarians and staff to help law students use ICLE's resources in their clinics and practical classes. Before joining ICLE in 2008, she practiced municipal and employment defense at a midsized firm in Farmington Hills, MI. She is a member of the State Bar of Michigan and its ADR, Appellate Practice, Intellectual Property, Labor and Employment, Litigation, Negligence, and Worker's Compensation Sections.
