ICLE's Sponsoring Organizations Thomas M. Cooley Law School The Thomas M. Cooley Law School is a fully accredited, independent, college of law. Chartered as a non-profit educational corporation by the state of Michigan in 1972, Cooley Law School was founded by a group of active judges, practicing attorneys and experienced business people, led by former Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Thomas E. Brennan. Cooley's founders dreamed of a law school that would offer a legal education to those not traditionally part of the legal profession mainstream. They also intended to offer a curriculum that focused as much on the practical application of the law as academic mastery. The law school's mission statement reflects that goal: The mission of the Thomas M. Cooley Law School is to prepare its students for entry into the legal profession through an integrated program with practical scholarship as its guiding principle and focus. The school has not strayed from that original purpose. In keeping with its emphasis on the practical, Cooley Law School offers probably the biggest variety in scheduling options to be found in legal education. Students can complete their Juris Doctor degree in anywhere from 24 to 48 months, with choices in between. They can attend class in the weekday mornings, afternoons or evenings, or on Saturdays and Sundays, and can begin their education in January, May or September. With rolling admissions, Cooley accepts applications throughout the year and students may generally start school in the class of their choice.
