Michael J. Nichols has practiced law for over 17 years and focused on operating while intoxicated (OWI) cases for nine years. He now focuses his practice on complex criminal cases, expanding beyond drunk driving and drugged driving cases, and has litigated several high-profile cases. Mr. Nichols is the author of "Michigan Criminal Law and Procedure with Forms, Operating While Intoxicated Handbook" (Thomson Reuters) and has authored several chapters on forensic analysis and other topics for other publications. A frequent lecturer and speaker, he is an adjunct professor of driving under the influence (DUI) law and practice and forensic evidence in criminal cases at Cooley Law School. Since his admission to the Michigan Bar, Mr. Nichols founded the Michigan Association of OWI Attorneys (MIAOWIA), helped found the DUI Defense Lawyers of America, and became a Sustaining Member and Faculty for the National College for DUI Defense. He is active on the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan Rules and Laws Committee, is an elected member of the State Bar of Michigan Criminal Law Section Council, and is a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers Body Cam Task Force.
