Hon. Judy A. Hartsfield

In 2004, Hon. Judy A. Hartsfield was appointed by Governor Jennifer M. Granholm to the probate court to hear child abuse and delinquency cases. Effective January 1, 2007, Judge Hartsfield was appointed presiding judge of the Third Judicial Circuit Court - Family Division, Juvenile Section. After six years as an assistant city attorney for Highland Park, she joined the Michigan Department of Attorney General as a staff attorney in 1988. In 1997, she became the first African American female to head a division in the history of the Michigan attorney general's office when she was named head of the child abuse and neglect division. In 2003, she was promoted to bureau chief of the Child and Family Services Bureau. A member of the National College of Probate Judges and the Association of Black Judges, Judge Hartsfield serves on the Governor's Task Force on Children's Justice and the advisory board for the Dads from Day One Initiative.She also serves on the board of directors for the Children's Aid Society and the Children's Charter of the Courts of Michigan. Judge Hartsfield is frequently a guest lecturer and presenter on child welfare law at Wayne State University, Marygrove College, and various legal seminars and conferences.
