Hon. Robert H. Cleland

Hon. Robert H. Cleland was appointed a U.S. District Judge by President George H.W. Bush and was commissioned on June 19, 1990. A graduate of the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill School of Law, he was in private practice of law in Port Huron with his father, Delmer L. Cleland, from 1972 through 1975. During those years Judge Cleland also served parttime as an assistant prosecuting attorney for St. Clair County. In 1981, having been elevated through the ranks of the prosecuting attorney's office in the preceding nine years, he was elected prosecuting attorney and was reelected, without opposition, for two succeeding terms. In that capacity Judge Cleland also represented the county's civil interests in state and federal courts as the county's corporation counsel. He was the Republican candidate for state attorney general in 1986 and served as president of the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan 1988-1989.
