James Earl King, Jr. is a supervising attorney for the Neighborhood Defender Service (NDS). Prior to his work at NDS, Mr. King was a managing partner and shareholder at The Cochran Firm and also worked as a supervising trial attorney at the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia, where he achieved a 96% success rate in over two dozen jury trials ranging from assault, weapons offenses, and homicide. He has achieved similar success in revocation hearings before the U.S. Parole Commission and sealed proceedings for juveniles charged with wide-ranging criminal offenses. Galvanized by the horrors experienced by underrepresented communities, Mr. King was a founding member of the Black Public Defender Association, a national organization that aims to improve the quality of defense provided to low-income communities across the United States by creating and maintaining a national network of skilled Black public defenders. He is also a longstanding board member of Lawyers for the People, a former member of the board of directors of the School Justice Project, and a volunteer for the D.C. Prisoners Project and the Mississippi Center for Justice. In addition to his criminal defense practice, Mr. King has served as a consultant on numerous civil cases, provided training on the essential aspects and skills of trial practice to various public defender agencies, Criminal Justice Act panels, private practitioners, and students, and was an adjunct professor teaching trial advocacy skills at the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law. He is admitted to practice in Michigan, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. District Courts for the District of Columbia and Eastern District of Michigan.
