Derek T. Howard

Derek T. Howard focuses his practice on business law, including such areas as litigation, class actions, auto supplier disputes, software disputes, contract matters, and government contracting. He also serves as a facilitator/mediator, having completed 48 hours of general civil mediation training approved by the State Court Administrative Office. Between 2013 and 2019, Mr. Howard worked as a judicial staff attorney in Oakland County's Business Court, concentrating on the following types of disputes: business, complex commercial, class actions, mergers and acquisitions, member and shareholder oppression, contract, fraud, and real estate. Earlier in his career, as a judicial staff attorney in the Oakland County Circuit Court, he worked in widely varying areas of the law, including general civil, criminal, appellate, family, adoption, and juvenile delinquency. A member of the State Bar of Michigan and the Oakland County Bar Association, Mr. Howard is the current chair of the latter's Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee and actively involved with its Business Court and Counsel Committee. Between 2007 and 2019, he served as an adjunct professor of law at the Western Michigan University Thomas M. Cooley Law School, teaching three different legal research and writing classes.
