Hon. Mark T. Boonstra

Judge Mark T. Boonstra was appointed to the Michigan Court of Appeals by Governor Rick Snyder in March 2012. From 2015 to 2017, he concurrently served as a trial judge on the Michigan Court of Claims. Before his appointment to the Court of Appeals, he was a senior principal in a large law firm, where he practiced law for nearly 27 years, including serving as a deputy chair of the firm's litigation practice group and as cochair of its appellate practice section. At the time of his appointment, Judge Boonstra was recognized in "The Best Lawyers in America" in the areas of antitrust law, appellate practice, bet-the-company litigation, commercial litigation, antitrust litigation, First Amendment litigation, and securities litigation. He also served as a law clerk to Hon. Ralph B. Guy, Jr., in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. Judge Boonstra graduated from the University of Michigan in 1983 with both a juris doctor degree and a master of applied economics degree. He has been active in the Federal Bar Association, the Washtenaw County Bar Association, and especially the State Bar of Michigan, where he served in the Representative Assembly (2005-2011) and as chair of the Section on Antitrust, Franchising, and Trade Regulation (2000-2001), and is a fellow of the Michigan State Bar Foundation. Judge Boonstra chairs the Michigan Supreme Court Committee on Model Civil Jury Instructions and is the vice-chair of the Michigan Retirement Board.
