Mark H. Cousens

Mark H. Cousens is a labor attorney and arbitrator. Admitted to practice in Michigan and Ohio, Mr. Cousens has spent his career representing labor organizations and their members. Mr. Cousens is currently either general or special counsel to numerous state and national labor organizations, such as the Michigan affiliates of the American Federation of Teachers; the Organization of School Administrators and Supervisors, American Federation of School Administrators, AFL-CIO; several Michigan affiliates of the Amalgamated Transit Union; and other independent labor organizations. He has been lead counsel on a number of major matters in the Michigan Court of Appeals and Supreme Court, including the case deciding that teacher unions that strike are not liable for money damages and the case deciding that the Teacher Tenure Commission may reduce or modify penalties imposed by a local school board. Mr. Cousens also serves as an ad hoc labor arbitrator and serves on the labor panels administered by the American Arbitration Association and the Michigan Employment Relations Commission. He has been an invited speaker at all of Michigan's major universities, for the Industrial Relations Research Association, and for the American Arbitration Association.
