Hon. G. Patrick Hillary

Hon. G. Patrick Hillary was elected to the bench for a term starting in 2001, and in 2005 he was named the presiding judge of the Family Division of the Kent County Circuit Court. A graduate of Cooley Law School, he began practicing law in 1983 and was a sole practitioner prior to being elected judge. His private practice included the areas of business, corporate, real estate, wills and trusts, estate planning, and family law. Judge Hillary is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, the Grand Rapids Bar Association and its Family Law Section, the Probate Judges Association, and the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges. He has taught several law-related courses, was an editorial advisor for the Michigan Judicial Institute (MJI) "Lawyer ad Litem Protocol" publication, and served as an academic advisor for other MJI programs. In addition to serving on many local boards, such as the Kent County (KC) Families and Children's Coordinating Council, the KC Community Corrections Advisory Board, and the KC Alternative Dispute Resolution Plan Oversight Committee, Judge Hillary has served on the National Child Welfare Advisory Board in Washington, DC, created for the development of standards applicable to the treatment of unaccompanied alien children in the United States.
