Richard C. Boothman defended malpractice lawsuits for 22 years before joining the University of Michigan Health System (UMHS) in 2001, where he served as assistant general counsel until 2004. In his current role as chief risk officer for the UMHS, he has advocated a principled, proactive, and honest approach to patient injuries and patient safety by promoting improvements in communication between caregivers and patients. Articles about this new approach were published in the American Health Lawyers Association's "Journal of Health and Life Sciences Law" and "Annals of Internal Medicine Journal," among others. The concept was so unique that it was featured in a wide variety of news and print media, and Mr. Boothman was recognized by "Midwest In-House Counsel" magazine and "Michigan Lawyers Weekly" with their "Leader in the Law Award." He has also worked extensively with members of Congress, state governments, and the medical and legal communities, advising on new approaches to patient injuries, malpractice claims, and legislation. A graduate of the University of Detroit School of Law, he sits on the board of governors for the National Patient Safety Foundation and the board of directors for the Michigan Hospital Association Patient Safety Organization.
