What to Expect: Contributing a Form or Checklist

What Is the Formbank?

ICLE’s Formbank is an online collection of assorted drafted forms with a commentary section explaining legal background and perspective. These forms are samples used in actual legal matters, written in plain English, and edited to be generic.

What Is a Checklist?

A checklist is a handy and easy-to-read document that a lawyer can use to make sure he or she has covered all bases when handling a particular matter or transaction or performing a particular task. The contributor submits the checklist with a commentary section explaining legal background and perspective. The checklist does not include explanation of each of the items in the list. Rather, it is a distillation of what the lawyer needs to know.

Benefits of Becoming a Formbank or Checklist Contributor

Contact with ICLE Staff

  • An ICLE staff lawyer will
    • explain the process to you in detail,
    • work with you to edit and finalize your form or checklist, and
    • send you a copy of the form or checklist once it is posted on the ICLE website.
  • An ICLE staff member will request your biography and high-resolution photo for the ICLE website.
  • Feel free to contact the ICLE staff lawyer working with you at any point during the process if you have questions.

Time Commitment

Contributing a form will probably take you about one hour, depending on the complexity of the topic. You can remove any identifying information and send along your form to the ICLE staff lawyer.

Drafting a checklist will probably take you about two hours, depending on the complexity of the topic. The editing process will likely take less time.

Continuing Obligations

If your checklist or form includes cites to primary law, it will be continually updated as necessary. If your form or checklist needs revision, an ICLE staff lawyer will contact you with questions or suggestions. You will review the form or checklist and draft edits (or approve edits that the ICLE lawyer suggested). The ICLE lawyer working with you will give you plenty of time to review and revise your form or checklist.
