Hon. Scott W. Dales was appointed as U.S. bankruptcy judge for the Western District of Michigan in October 2007 and was appointed as chief judge in 2013. Initially, he served as a legislative analyst for the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac) and attended law school. After graduating from The George Washington University Law School, Judge Dales served as a law clerk for Hon. Con. G. Cholakis, U.S. District Judge for the Northern District of New York. Following that, he practiced law for several years in Albany, New York, with Barrett, Gravante, Carpinello, and Stern; and in 1998 he moved to Michigan to clerk for Hon. James D. After that clerkship, Judge Dales practiced law with Dykema in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and served as in-house counsel to National City Corporation and its bank and nonbank subsidiaries until 2007. As a member of National City's insolvency practice group, he worked primarily with distressed commercial transactions, including National City's aircraft lease portfolio and troubled automotive supplier loans. In 2016, Judge Dales was appointed to serve on the Information Technology Committee of the Judicial Conference of the United States. He is an author of several articles on bankruptcy-related issues.
