Mary Chartier is a criminal defense litigator and partner at the firm. She and her business partner, Takura Nyamfukudza, along with the team at the firm, recently succeeded in exonerating three wrongfully convicted people in one year. One man served 26 years in prison for a murder he did not commit, another man served 9 years in prison for a murder he did not commit, and a woman served 18 years in prison for a murder she did not commit. She and the team at the firm also recently won three criminal sexual conduct cases in one year. Ms. Chartier has extensive experience litigating serious and complex criminal defense cases and has successfully defended clients in numerous federal and state trials. She has served as lead counsel and defended people of numerous crimes, including those involving terrorism, racketeering, drug dealing, human rights violations, crimes against the United States, bank robbery, criminal sexual conduct, and homicide, as well as white-collar crimes, such as money laundering, mortgage fraud, and health care fraud. Ms. Chartier has argued and won cases at the Michigan Supreme Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. In addition to exonerating those wrongfully convicted and imprisoned, she has been involved with exonerating four dogs who were wrongfully placed on "dog death row." Ms. Chartier is a fellow of the American Board of Criminal Lawyers, the American Bar Foundation, the Michigan State Bar Foundation, and the Ingham County Bar Foundation. She is also a member of the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan (CDAM) and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Ms. Chartier is the past president of the Ingham County Bar Association. She taught law school students for over 10 years, including teaching the nation's first medical marijuana class. Ms. Chartier has presented at many nationwide and state conferences on topics related to criminal defense, including conferences organized by CDAM, the Michigan Judges Association, the Michigan District Judges Association, Clio, and the National College for DUI Defense. She has also taught at the Hillman Advocacy Program, which provides federal courtroom training to trial lawyers and is sponsored by the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan, as well as for ICLE. Ms. Chartier has been recognized for her criminal defense work, including being named one of the Leaders in the Law by "Michigan Lawyers Weekly," receiving the Distinguished Barrister’s Award by the Davis-Dunnings Bar Association, being honored as the 2020 Leo A. Farhat Outstanding Attorney of the Year, and receiving the Michael Franck Award from the State Bar of Michigan. The firm also won the 2022 international Legal Impact Reisman Award for their work in defending and exonerating those wrongfully accused and wrongfully imprisoned.
