Hon. Ellen S. Carmody

Grand Rapids, Michigan


Hon. Ellen S. Carmody began serving as a U.S. magistrate judge in the Western District of Michigan in 2000. She is a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Michigan. Following a two-year clerkship with Hon. Douglas W. Hillman in the Western District of Michigan, Judge Carmody joined the law firm of Law, Weathers, and Richardson, where she worked until her appointment to the bench. As a shareholder of the firm, she supervised the firm's pro bono program for several years. Judge Carmody has served and continues to serve on the steering committee and faculty of the Hillman Advocacy Program. She has served as adjunct faculty at the Michigan State University College of Law and in the Criminal Justice Department at Grand Valley State University. Judge Carmody is a member of the State Bar of Michigan (U.S. Courts Committee member), the Federal Bar Association, and the American Inns of Court. She has been a member of the board of trustees for the Grand Rapids Bar Association and has served on numerous other committees for the bar associations of which she has been a member. In addition to her work on the Accelerated Community Entry Program, an intensive supervision program for high risk offenders, Judge Carmody also serves on the pro bono, alternative dispute resolution, employment dispute resolution, and criminal law committees for the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan.
