Manny W. Schecter

Manny W. Schecter is chief patent counsel, associate general counsel, and managing intellectual property (IP) attorney at IBM, the top annual U.S. patentee for the last 19 years. In his current position, he leads IBM's worldwide IP law organization on patent matters and advises on IP strategy and policy. Mr. Schecter has been employed in the IP organization of IBM for over 20 years, including positions in Vermont, Virginia, Arizona, and New York. He is currently located at IBM corporate headquarters in Armonk, New York. Mr. Schecter currently serves on the board of directors of the Intellectual Property Owners Association (IPO), the IPO Education Foundation, and Allied Security Trust. He is the chairperson of the Professional Programs Committee and a past chairperson of the Electronic and Computer Law Committee of the American Intellectual Property Law Association. Mr. Schecter organized the patent quality initiative that became the Peer-to-Patent project that was successfully piloted in the United States and several other countries. Elements of the project are now incorporated into the USPTO patent examination process in accordance with the recently enacted America Invents Act. He has spoken at numerous IP-related events, lectured at various universities, authored amicus briefs and articles on patent quality, and blogs at ibmip.com. Mr. Schecter is a graduate of George Washington University Law School.
