Hon. Marilyn J. Kelly

Bloomfield Hills, Michigan


Hon. Marilyn J. Kelly was a justice on the Michigan Supreme Court from 1997 through 2012 and was chief justice from 2009 to 2011. She joined the faculty of Wayne State University Law School in 2013 as its first Distinguished Jurist in Residence. Before serving on the Michigan Supreme Court, Justice Kelly was twice elected to and served 8 years on the Michigan Court of Appeals after practicing primarily family law for 17 years. She is a member of the Family Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan, a past member of the Family Law Section Council, and a former member of the State Bar's Representative Assembly. Justice Kelly is a past president of the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan and the Women's Bar Association and a past chair of the Family Law Committee of the Oakland County Bar Association. A current member of the Wayne State University Board of Governors and a past chair of the board, she is a past president of the Michigan State Board of Education and received the Michigan Education Association's Distinguished Service Award. Justice Kelly cochaired the Michigan Judicial Selection Task Force from 2011 to 2012 and the State Bar of Michigan's Open Justice Commission from 1998 to 2003. She served from 2006 to 2008 as president and moderator of the National Consortium on Racial and Ethnic Fairness in the Courts. Justice Kelly has been awarded honorary doctorate of law degrees by Eastern Michigan University, Michigan State University, and Wayne State University, and "Michigan Lawyers Weekly" named her Woman of the Year in 2012. She has written and lectured widely.
