A distinguished professor emeritus at Cooley Law School, Gary P. Bauer taught Wills, Trusts and Estates in a clinical third-year program for students designed to help students learn the substantive material in the context of live client interaction. In addition, Professor Bauer has taken the lead in preparing students for the business of law through courses that he taught such as Solo By Design. He also established Google Groups along with Directed Studies designed to help students develop a sound and viable business plan before graduation. A member of the the American Bar Association (ABA), the State Bar of Michigan (SBM), and the Ingham County Bar Association as well as a member and past chair of the SBM's Practice Management Section, Professor Bauer has been dedicated to the promotion of solo practice as a viable option, with proper preparation and planning, for law school graduates. He was a member of the planning committee for ICLE’s first Solo and Small Firm Institute and has been a presenter at that seminar on several occasions. He has also authored a number of law review articles, done presentations, and written articles in nonlegal publications. He was awarded the ABA Solo, Small Firm and General Practice Division Solo and Small Firm Trainer Award, which recognizes attorneys who have made significant contributions to educating lawyers or law students regarding the opportunities and challenges of solo and small firm practice. He was also awarded the SBM Solo and Small Firm Achievement Award. Professor Bauer is the author of "Solo Lawyer By Design," published by the Solo and Small Firm Division of the American Bar Association.
