As the housing attorney for the Michigan Poverty Law Program (MPLP), James E. Schaafsma practices primarily in the area of low-income housing law. A collaboration between Legal Services of South Central Michigan and the University of Michigan Law School, the MPLP provides support services to local legal aid programs and other poverty law advocates statewide. Among other memberships, Mr. Schaafsma serves on the Resident Issues Advisory Committee of the National Low Income Housing Coalition, the Local Information Network for Change Advisory Council of the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty, and the Michigan Court Forms Committee and its Civil Infractions, Other Civil, and Summary Proceedings Work Group. He also is and has been a board member of several community and religious organizations. Mr. Schaafsma has done numerous presentations, trainings, and articles on low-income housing topics.
